WORKSHOP: Soundpainting #1 - Introduction to soundpainting

Soundpainting is a multidisciplinary compositional sign language for musicians, dancers, actors, teachers and visual artists. In 1974, Walter Thompson established it as an art form geared towards real-time composing. Soundpainting vocabulary consists of around 1500 different gestures (words) transmitted by the conductor (soundpainter) to an ensemble. Its members are thus directed as to who/how/when/what should be played or improvised. The resulting music is a lively dialogue between real-time composer and ensemble, yielding exciting and entertaining performances.

WORKSHOP: Band Profiling Boot Camp - Band Coaching & Recording Weekend

In theory, there is much potential in the musical endeavours of a group (band)- however, the practical implementation on the way to success often proves difficult. For one, the objective look from the outside is often missing; also, communication and the ensuing catalyst or impeding processes within the group are subject to the laws of social dynamics. All these fields, in a professionally structured band process, are usually supervised and optimized by the so-called producer. The VMI offers an exclusive weekend seminar for all bands interested in such an optimization of its recources, with professional supervision.

The technical changes brought about by the digital era have greatly affected the recording process, especially with regards to electric guitar. This seminar examines how to proceed and what to look out for, in all things guitar recording. In a series of hands-on trials, the best amp-, speaker- and microphone simulations are compared to the actual devices they seek to emulate. The comparisons will obviously focus on sound; the sensible blending of digital and analogue techniques within the recording process will equally be explored in this course.

SEMINAR: Popular music for classic guitarists

Musical studies on classical instruments have increasingly come to embrace elements of popular music. The respective curriculae aimed at training teachers at music schools and other institutions have thus far somewhat neglected this aspect, especially in the fields of sound shaping, rhtythm, harmony and improvisation. Of all instruments, the guitar specifically presents a challenge to all teachers, since its key influence and seminal role in the entire popular music idiom is undisputed. On the menu are differences in contruction, playing technique, sound shaping, literature, stylistics, harmony, rhythm, improvisation, as well as the use of amplifiers, effects and digital teaching tools.

TANGO WORKSHOP

Tango - pure passion? The exaggerated image of the southern composer, who sits at the piano and lets his emotions run wild ... What lies behind this picture and can this stereotype be upheld? The Argentine composer and pianist Diego Collatti will explore this question, demonstrating that the 'Argentine Tango' is less like a sensory roller coaster, but rather consists of craft elements that contrasts with each other in a functional way. These consist, for example, of formal aspects of the pieces, hints to the articulation in the musical performance and contrasting characters that sometimes appear melancholic, sometimes violent. Composers such as Piazzolla, Gardel and Salgán skillfully combined the craft of these elements, so their music conveyed passion, charm or sensuality. Collatti will show what hidden and less obvious elements make up this music, giving a clear picture of the inner life of one of the most famous genres of our time.

Music finds its way among oblique narrations, with lyrical and dramatic moments, and intriguing harmonic textures. The output is an idiosyncratic improvised chamber music with sudden strokes of controlled (even not) violence. Nice chance to feel how sparkling is the relationship between musicians that share intentions, derivations, approaches whole perspective dialogic moves.
