Study description

The 3 year diploma study for singer /songwriters offers a combination of vocal, instrumental and compositional studies. Alongside weekly private lessons in creative songwriting, this education also includes instrumental, vocal and compositional courses as well as a series of practical and theoretical supplementary lessons, e.g. showcase or stage performance training so that the students become competent in both artistic/concertante and compositional (e.g. film music) areas.



Study plan

The main study for singer/songwriters is called  Creative Songwriting. The focus is on creating songs with professional and internationally active singer/songwriters. In addition, students are coached via Vocal Training covering various techniques, and  receive   Instrumental Tuition (piano or guitar).

Various lessons are also planned to cover harmonic and compositional principles such as: HarmonyMusic Theory in PractiseComposition and ArrangementMedia Composition  and Film Music and Computer-Based Composition.

In order to be get essential information about working in management and studio situations, lessons such as:  Self-Management and Music LawSound Technology Basics , Microphone and Recording TechniquesEffects in the Studio and Live,  and Mixing and Mastering also form part of the study.

The practical aspect of bringing the songs to the stage takes place through special coaching, e.g. Showcase and Stage Performance Training as well as numerous other workshops and concerts.




Study commencement: February and September

Study duration: 6 semesters

Credit for previous studies: Study programs and/or courses previously completed at officially recognised institutions can be accredited for study at the VMI. The minimum study duration is reduced accordingly.

Requirements: Playing experience, knowledge of musc theory as well passing the entrance exam. Applicants from non-EU countries must have a vilad visa. This can be applied for the relevant consulate upon passing the entrance exam.

Grants and scholarships: Students at the VMI are entitled to family benefit, student grants and scholarships in accordance with legal requirements. Further information regarding this matter can be attained from our office.

Graduation: The study is completed with the final exam. The certificates and diplomas issued by the VMI are equivalent to those from state institutes of higher education and are internationally recognised. With admission to a diploma study, it is possible to extend the qualification through admission to a Bachelor program (in coopertion with the ICMP-Institute of Contemporary Music Performance).

€120 once-only enrolment fee

€395 monthly tuition fee







Online registration for entrance exams is possible at any time and is free and non-binding. Entrance exams serve to evaluate the applicant's current practical and theoretical knowledge in order to establish whether this is sufficient for a study at the VMI-Vienna Music Institute.

Following online registration, entrance exam applicants are informed of exam dates via e-mail. The main entrance exam dates are as follows:

- For study commencement in September: May and June

- For study commencement in February: November and December

Alternative dates may be offered subject to availability.
