Can VMI studies also be done extra occupationally?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Many students work alongside their studies at the VMI in a part-time job. Consecutively planned lesson plans generally make it possible to harmonise study and work. In order to have sufficient practise time and to benefit properly from the study, it is recommended to reduce working hours to a maximum of 20 hours per week.

Do I need to reside in Vienna in order to study at the VMI?

Accepted Answer

No. Due to the economical and time saving lesson plans it is also possible for 'commuters' to study at the VMI. Students from other states often plan their lessons in such a way that they only need to come to the VMI on 1 or 2 days. Over the course of a complete study it is generally possible to graduate without any problems. Of course, students who wish to spend more time at the VMI can take part in lessons, workshops, etc. over the whole week which also leads to a closer connection to the international community of the VMI.

Is it possible to receive state grants for study at the VMI?

Accepted Answer

Yes. VMI students with Austrian citizenship are generally entitled to study benefits and grants as well as child and family support. For further information please contact our secretary (Sekretariat für Studienangelegenheiten und Studienberatung) and the responsible authorities.

Question 4

Is there an age limit for study at the VMI?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The minimum age to be enrolled as a regular student is 15 years old; the maximum age is 29 years old. Exceptions could be an exceptional entrance exam, the previous completion of other studies, professional responsibilities, parental leave or military service which can delay the study commencement. For those not meeting the above mentioned criteria to be enrolled as a regular student, it is possible to be enrolled as a non-regular student following a successful entrance exam.

What is the difference between the entrance exam for preparatory study and for the full study?

Accepted Answer

The entrance exam serves to establish how developed the applicant's knowledge and skills have progressed and whether they fulfil the criteria for the desired study. Therefore there is no difference in the formal procedure, whether for a preparatory, regular or non-regular study. The difference lies only in the requirements for the respective study.

What entrance exam should I register for?

Accepted Answer

For those wishing to enrol as a regular student, but who aren't sure whether they fulfil the entrance criteria fully, it is recommended to apply for their desired study. Should these criteria not be fulfilled, then the applicant will receive further information about alternative possibilities to study at VMI (e.g. a preparatory study or pre-study course). On the other hand, those who have registered for a preparatory study and have already fulfilled the criteria necessary (e.g. for a Diploma or Teaching Qualification) will be informed that enrolment as a regular or non-regular student is also possible.

Is it possible to repeat an unsuccessful entrance exam?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Entrance exams can repeated as often as you like. Furthermore, a negative result has no influence upon future applications.

Is it necessary to have a command of a second instrument (e.g. piano) for successful application?

Accepted Answer

No. The learning of a second instrument, to the extent that it is necessary for the respective study or subject, takes place as part of the VMI lesson plans. However, although not compulsory, previous knowledge of a second instrument can be  beneficial.

Is evidence of previous education (GCSEs, A-Levels, etc.) necessary?"

Accepted Answer

No. For graduation in artistic studies, in this case also including pedagogy (e.g. Teaching Qualification), this is not necessary.

Accepted Answer

Accepted Answer

Yes. Courses and study years completed at other officially recognised institutions are recognised by the VMI and the study duration is reduced accordingly. A prerequisite is the presentation of the relevant certificates. The minimum study duration after credits for previously completed courses and study years is 4 semesters.

How do international students get a valid visa?

Accepted Answer

International students can request a written invitation to an entrance exam from our International Office. Following a successful entrance exam, a confirmation is issued and the student can take this to the responsible authority.

Can VMI students choose their teachers?

Accepted Answer

Yes, subject to availability. Teacher requests in the main subject, ensemble and second instrument can be considered. Lessons in other complimentary subjects are held by specialised teachers designated for that area.

Is it possible to visit the VMI before the beginning of a course or study?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Information and detailed consultation can be obtained from the secretary during office hours. In addition, there is also the possibility to come to the VMI as a guest for a day and take part in our diverse programme – this is of course both  non-binding and free. Furthermore, there is one open day per semester offering not only a VMI tour but also the chance to enjoy a free trial lesson, see our performances, visit various lessons and chat with VMI student.

Are there also trial lessons at the VMI?

Yes. Free trial lessons are offered at our 'Open Day'. Furthermore, it is also possible to take a trial lesson for the reduced price of €25. For trial lessons please register via e-mail to office@vmi.at.

Question 17

Can you complete a program at VMI with an academic degree (e.g. BA or MA)?

Accepted Answer

No, the degree programs at VMI conclude with state-recognized diplomas, which, according to the Austrian Ministry of Education, are equivalent to a bachelor's degree and qualify graduates for admission to further master's studies.
