Interview with DEEP TALK

They met in VMI lecturer Fred Eisler’s songwriting class. Studied together, played together, and eventually graduated from the Vienna Music Institute. Now, it’s time for the next big step: their debut single is just around the corner. Out of the Blue is a promising summer track — made to be streamed on repeat all season long.

We caught up with the band to talk about their journey and their creative process.

Let’s start at the beginning – how did Deep Talk come together, and what brought you to form a band in the first place?

We all met in our very first ensemble lesson in the winter semester of 2020 at the vmi

(shoutout Fred Eisler!) At the same time covid was shutting down the world and everybody

was really hungry to play music together. Quickly we started meeting up for jamming and

writing songs, and here we are now.

You all met during your studies – can you tell us who studied what, and how those different backgrounds influence your sound today?

Ben (v) studied songwriting, Michael Paul (g), Daniel (g), Ege (b), Michael G (dr) and Vasco

(p) studied Konzertfach, Michael Paul and Vasco also did IGP! Of course there was a benefit

in studying different disciplines, for example experiencing the songwriting techniques Ben

learned or getting an approach on band leading in Ensembleleitung.

How would you describe the creative chemistry between you as a band – was it instant, or did it grow over time?

We‘ve come to the conclusion that it is always a process. From the very beginning on we

liked each other, personally and as musicians, despite the fact that we have different

backgrounds. Every one of us is very ambitious in his musical vision and it is demanding to

merge all our ideas, but this is also the fascinating thing about a band. What grew over time

is how we communicate our ideas and the appreciation that comes when we come to a

result.

Your debut single Out Of The Blue is about to drop – what inspired the track, and what story does it tell for you?

Out Of The Blue is a song about love at first sight. The light and easy version of love that is

far away from any connection of time. This is also how it feels to play the music, light and

easy, smooth and weightless with a touch of melancholy.

The song is described as a 'promising summer song' – what makes it a summer anthem in your eyes (and ears)?

It’s in the words, in the melodies, in the instrumentation of the tune, that it feels like the first

evening breeze after a hot summer day.

Looking back at your time at VMI: What’s one thing you took from that experience that still resonates with you today?

One thing is the community, the support of the students through the whole time at VMI was a beautiful experience, sharing ideas, skills and time. Daniel still has a tattoo inspired by his

time at the vmi on his left wrist spelling: „phrasing“.

Was there a special moment as a band that you would like to share with us?

One day before a concert we rehearsed in the basement at the church pub. When we wanted to leavethe bar, it was raining heavily outside, so we decided to stay for one more drink. Quickly, we climbed up the open stage, swapped instruments, and drummer Michael Gansberger impressed us all. We went through the whole set and Michael played every given signature melodie, basslines, second voices and even solos on various instruments.

We still don‘t know if he is just nuts or secretly practicing the songs on his own.

And finally – if Out of the Blue is the beginning, what’s next for Deep Talk? Where do you want the journey to go?

Musicians keep on playing! So we do, Out of the Blue is the first song of a four-track-EP to

be released next spring. The journey has multiple paths. Music Videos are up to come and

different concepts like an unplugged concert with a string section for example. We won‘t stop trying things out! Stay tuned
